The Grading system is normally used in most of the schools to monitor student’s performance. However in India Ranking system are still available in some schools to track student’s progress.
Some of the advantages of the grading systems are they help in tracking the student’s performance and help in improving their performance in future.
Some of the disadvantages of the grading systems are the students will be put in to lot of trouble. For example not all the students are talented equally. Some may be capable of scoring A grade while other may be capable of scoring D or F grade. A teacher should make students as well as parents understand this.
Some students are capable of presenting the contents what they have learned throughout the year in an appealing way. Not all the students posses the same quality. So the teachers must ensure that the students are gathering the subject knowledge irrespective of their grades.
One more disadvantage with the grading system is that the students will be pressurized by their parents in order to score good grades. This may stress the students and can even pull down student’s performance.
Instead of just giving away grades the teachers should help students for self improvement. This is because it is the nature of students and parents to look up students who score A grades and making other students too feel lower. The teachers should take up their role in this part. They must communicate with the students regarding their strengths and weakness. They must also provide guidelines to the students and help them to improve.
These kinds of assessments and grading systems cannot be changed. However it is the responsibility of the teachers to make students and parents understand the grading system. They must also provide valuable feedback to the students with not only in respect to their performance in examinations but also they should try to understand student’s level of knowledge in the particular subjects.
