Learning English is completely different from speaking it fluently. Here are the five commandments for conquering the English language.
Learn Phrases:
The biggest mistake everyone does while learning English is just memorizing words. While they might make you vocabulary geniuses, you will fall flat while constructing simple sentences. When you learn phrases, it becomes easier to form sentences. Yes learning words can improve your vocabulary but only by learning phrases will you be able to apply it practically.
Stop reading those grammar books:
It may sound a little absurd but that’s the truth. When you submerge yourself into learning all about grammar, you over analysis sentences and get confused. Rules will just mess up your thinking process. Only if you talk without thinking about those grammar rules, will speaking come freely.
Think in English:
Whenever someone tries talking in English, they think about the sentence in their native tongue and then translate it in English. That is just wrong. When you translate any idea from your native tongue into English, you mess up the logical order of words. Try thinking in English and you will find surprising results in your speaking skills.
Read and listen and then read and listen yet again:
Try reading as many books as you possibly can. Reading books or any other article will give you an idea about the different ways of speaking and how to play with words. The next step is to listen to native people speaking. Whether its audio tracks or just casual conversation, try listening to them. Also, learn from the right materials. When you learn from books, newspapers, TV shows from that particular native language, you tend to improve the command over the language.
Talk It Out:
Just reading and listening won’t be sufficient. Try talking with another person. The more you talk, the more fluent you get. Participate in “group talks”. Make “Only English” rule among your friends and family.
Follow these handful rules and can master your English speaking skills.
